Christian Basics: Living As A Follower Means...
At times it's a good thing to go back and cover the basics. One reason is that as we live the Christian life and can have the tendency to learn certain new things and in some ways forget or minimize the basics. Basics are the foundation. It doesn't matter if it's a sport we want to be or remain good at, some artistic skill or even a job that we do. All those things can't possibly be accomplished, and certainly not accomplished well without knowing and doing the basics. It's a fact of life.
We're looking at some of the basic building blocks necessary for living as a successful follower of our Lord. Some are more spiritual and others are very practical sounding. We can tend to want to separate being spiritual from some everyday aspects of our lives (like how I treat my family members), and think being spiritual (mature) is simply focused on the more "religious" side of life. This stems from an unbiblical division between the sacred and the secular. In extreme, it can lead to the mentality that as long as I do some religious good stuff I'm okay, and cheating on my taxes or treating people around me badly is a separate matter and not part of the Christian life.
This mindset may be common in our culture, but it's in no way considered normal in Scripture. As a result, we will be looking at some of the basics to make sure we're living as a good follower not just barely following in a few areas. We'll see that our whole life is to be lived for God.
Some of the things we're looking at are what living as a follower means...
Being a real follower, Growing to know our God more, Being obedient, Fighting temptation, Using my gifts, My life is marked by wisdom, Sharing my faith, Being wise and faithful with finances as a few of the basics to be a successful follower.
About Sermons: Sermons are expository in nature (with some exceptions) because Scripture should be the focus not the cleverness or wisdom of the pastor. It is also because God Himself has spoken, why would we want the wisdom of man? Therefore it's in our best interest to discover what God has said on the various topics of life (not what a pastor has opinions or advice on) and learn to apply them to our own lives and situations.
